Paying Less Council Tax
Full council tax is normally charged where 2 or more adults live in a property. Your c
ouncil tax bill can be reduced in a number of ways depending on your household circumstances:
Sole resident discount
If only one person lives in a property, a 25% discount is given. This is called a 'sole resident discount'.
Disregard discounts
Certain people can be disregarded when working out council tax charges.
Discounts for unoccupied furnished properties and second homes
If no-one lives in a property and it remains furnished a 10% discount will be given, this applies to most holiday and second homes.
In some circumstances the discount can be 50%
- If the dwelling is a pitch occupied by a caravan or a mooring occupied by a boat
- If you are required to live in another specific property and it is a condition in your contract of employment
Reduction for disabled facilities
You may qualify for a reduction in your council tax if your home has
special facilities to meet the needs of a disabled person.
Exemptions
Some properties are exempt from council tax. These exemptions can relate to both occupied and unoccupied properties.
Council tax benefit
This is available to households who are on a low income or benefit to assist with the payment of council tax. More information is available on the
council tax benefit page.
