Empty Properties
Recent publicity on empty homes has encouraged members of the public to ask for lists of empty properties in their area. Harrogate Borough Council takes the issue of empty property extremely seriously, and recognises that the public interest may be served by making such information available.
Unfortunately, we are unable to provide a current list of empty properties to the public. However, if you are interested in buying or renting a specific empty property then the Council is able to pass on a letter to the Owner on your behalf, if we have the contact details.
Calling all owners of dilapidated empty properties!
Did you know that on renovations of residential property that has been empty for three years, the rate of VAT is only 5%? The Council's Empty Property Officer can give you a letter confirming the vacancy date in accordance with VAT Regulations.
The Government is currently considering extending this relief so that property that has been empty for only two years will also qualify for the reduced rate.
Renovations on a property that has been empty for ten years or more are exempt from VAT altogether where it is brought back into use as a dwellinghouse.
Empty property constitutes a wasted resource. If you own an empty property and want help or advice, or know of one in your neighbourhood, please contact us and we'll work together to bring it back into usefulness
