North Yorkshire County Council
Schools Carbon Reduction Officer
The Schools Carbon Reduction Officer can support schools in renewable energy projects and education on sustainability. Energy saving projects such as loft and cavity wall insulation, pipework insulation, lighting replacement, heating control improvements, voltage reduction can be paid for through a low interest loan offered by the Council on behalf of the Carbon Trust, as long as the pay back is under 5 years. All these projects are very effective in saving energy, money and carbon and pave the way for renewable energy projects such as wind and solar.
System Link Energy Manager
Online energy management tool for all schools in North Yorkshire, to allow you to keep an eye on your energy use, without relying on utility company estimates. Requires username and password available from NYCC.
Free Compost Bins and caddies
All schools in North Yorkshire can obtain free Home Composters (up to 3 per school) plus up to 5 caddies to collect the compostable waste. these can only be claimed once the school has received a talk on composting.

RHS Garden in Harrogate, offers educational services.
Yorkshire Agricultural Society
YAS organise the Great Yorkshire Show, and the Countryside Days, aimed at Key Stage 2.
York Environment Centre
Sustainable building adjacent to the St. Nicholas Fields Nature Reserve. Site includes a wind turbine, solar panels, green roof and composting facilities. the Centre has developed sessions for Years 5 and 6 to complement the Climate Action Programme.
Yorkshire Water
Free "flushsavers" (water saving devices for toilet cisterns), educational resources and activities relating to water use are available from Yorkshire Water.
Environment Awards & programmes
Eco-Schools
National programme offering a structured approach to developing sustainability in school. Eligible schools can aim to achieve one of Three levels of award Bronze, Silver and the prestigious "Green Flag".
BAFTERS Awards
the Harrogate District's environmental awards scheme has a category for schools. A cash prize is available, alongside local recognition for positive environmental work. the next BAFTERS Awards will be presented in 2009.

Science Museum
Website linked to the Science Museum's Energy Gallery exhibition. Lots of interactive activities including quizzes and the Energy Info Zone animations.

Greener Futures is an innovative teaching resource for environmental issues. Individual resources have been created for all Key Stages including online games.

Learning Through Landscapes
National charity which helps schools and early years settings make the most of their outdoor spaces for play and learning. This requires an annual subscription.
Sustainable Schools
Part of Teachernet, the Sustainable Schools area supports the DCSF drive towards sustainability in schools. Contains a lot of useful information and resources for teachers including lesson plans and links.
YH ESD Forum
Contains news, activities, resources and ideas on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).
