York Environment Centre
Essential facts
The York Environment Centre has developed a three-hour programme to complement the Climate Action Sessions. There is a small charge per child.
This is an optional part of the Climate Action Programme, and it was a very successful element during the pilot stage of the project, and is recommended.
Learning Objectives
The trip consolidates work on renewable energy, energy efficiency and recycling which has taken place in previous sessions.
Resources used at the Centre
There are various examples of sustainable technology in use at the Centre, including:
- Wind turbine
- Solar PV panels
- Solar thermal panels
- Woodfuel burner
- Compost heaps
- Wormery
- Green sedum roof
- Triple glazing
- Building design and orientation
- Nature reserve
- Composting toilets
- Rainwater harvesting
The centre is adjacent to the York Eco-depot, the largest straw-bale building in Europe, which also contains examples of low-carbon technology.

- Full Group Brainstorm. List ways of saving energy, being energy efficiency, generating cleaner energy and other ways to helping to stop global warming
- Ticking bomb game deciding what action we all can take
- Rounding off
