Winning Flowerbed Design has a European Feel
Europe is on the agenda once again this week for Harrogate Borough Council's Parks team but not in the shape of the Europe in Bloom in which Harrogate town and Darley took Gold last year.
As if to salute the
UK's presidency of the EU a flowerbed has been created on Montpellier Hill depicting the combined colours of the flags of Europe, St George and the Union Flag and is the winning design of Harrogate In Bloom's
Design A FlowerbedCompetition.
The Harrogate in Boom group, in partnership with Harrogate Borough Council, has been running this competition for several years for schoolchildren in the town.
The theme of
Plants without Borders was chosen last year because of the town's Entry in Europe In Bloom.
There were some excellent entries to judge but after much deliberation 13-year-old Natalie Millward from Granby High School was chosen as the winner.
Pam Grant, President of Harrogate in Bloom, said:
"The
Design a Flowerbed Competition is an ideal way to get young people thinking about their environment and how it might be used to attract the attention of residents and visitors alike.
Natalie'
s design was chosen as the winner because it brought a tricky theme to life very simply and brightly and we knew it would make a real impact when planted.
Let's hope that the Yorkshire in Bloom 2005 judges agree when they come to visit Harrogate in the summer."

will be able to see her winning design fully bedded out on Montpellier Hill on Thursday 7 July at 3.45pm.
Members of Harrogate Borough Council's Parks team will also be present along with Karen Sweeney, Sales Manager of the Yorkshire Event Centre - the sponsors of last year's competition, Pat Grant President of HIB and Councillor Pat Jones, Cabinet Member for Cultural Services.
