Charles was the son of Jane and the late George Chaplin, of 12 Stonefall Avenue, Starbeck, Harrogate. He was married to Sarah Elizabeth and they lived at Ten-Acre Reservoir, Haverah Park, Beckwithshaw. It would appear that Sarah later moved to 1 St. Nicholas Place, Wetherby Rd, Harrogate.
Charles had previously served in the 1/5th London Regiment (Prince of Wales' Own Civil Service Rifles) before being posted to the 6th London Regt. (City of London Rifles).
He was killed during the final German Spring Offensive in 1918, in which the Germans almost succeeded in defeating the Allies, before the might of the Americans made a German defeat inevitable. Many Allied positions were overrun and the bodies of the dead were often never identified. This was to be the fate of Charles Henry Chaplin, whose name is now commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial to the Missing of 1918.
Charles is also commemortaed on the Starbeck Memorial and the Beckwithshaw Church Memorial.
