Richard Dunwell was born in Spofforth and was the son of Richard Dunwell, who lived at 5 Regent Grove, Harrogate, before moving to 32 Albany Road, Bilton.
Before the outbreak of war he was employed at the Kursaal, Empire & Grand Opera House (now the Royal Hall) as a carpenter. He enlisted on 14th September 1914 and travelled to France in time to take part in the Battle of Loos, a year later.
He was posted as missing, aged 27, during this battle, though his friends clung to the hope, for some time, that he may have been a prisoner or temporarily separated from his regiment.
Alas, their hopes were to no avail. Richard's body was never found and his name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial which records the names of all those allied soldiers with no known grave in that area.
Richard is also commemorated on the St. Robert's Church memorial in Harrogate.
