Sydney Lowsley was married with 2 children.
He had worked in the Engineers Department of the Harrogate Corporation for 15 years and had risen to the position of Deputy Borough Engineer, before being called up for army service in August 1916.
Sydney was serving on board HMS President, a Flower class corvette, which was used by the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve for training purposes and was moored on the Thames in London.
He contracted pneumonia and died in a London naval hospital. As he had met his death in England, his body was returned to Harrogate, where it would have been buried with full military honours.
