Allotments
No garden or need more space? Then an allotment could be the answer.
There are numerous benefits from having an allotment such as:
- Providing a productive and therapeutic way to exercise in the fresh air
- Providing you with fresh fruit and vegetables
- A place of your own to relax and unwind
- Meeting people with similar interests and making new friends
Within the Harrogate district, the Council has 10 allotment sites. Seven of these sites are run under the
Self Administration Scheme.
Getting Started
Choose a site then contact either the appropriate site secretary, or the Customer Services Unit on 0845 300 6091. Once you have found a site and plot, you will need to read and sign a Tenancy Agreement, then you can start digging ... it's as simple as that!
Please be aware that allotments are very popular and at present there are long waiting lists on each site. Plots may not become available for up to two years.
Costs vary on each site, however, the self-administered sites usually have cheaper rents.

Your responsibilities once you have an allotment are:
- Keeping your plot tidy and cultivated.
- Keeping bonfires to a minimum. Composting is much kinder to the environment and to your neighbours!
- Showing consideration and respect for other plot-holders.
- Obtaining permission to erect sheds or greenhouses.
- Paying your rent promptly.
- Informing us straight away if you change your address.
- Above all - enjoying your plot!
We make a single charge per year which covers rent and water supply (if applicable). The cost depends on the size of the plot, price upon application and you will receive an invoice each year.
If you are receiving income support/family credit/unemployed benefit or are registered disabled or a senior citizen, you are entitled to a 50 per cent reduction on all Council-run sites.
You will be required to complete a pro-forma on application. Some self-administered sites also offer a concessionary rate.
