Donald was the son of Alexander Alfred and Katherine Mary Moffatt, of Ipswich. He was married to Barbara Lee Moffatt, whose residence is also recorded as being in Ipswich, in the Commonwealth War Graves Commission records.

One year before the war, he joined Harrogate Corporation, where he worked as an Assistant Solicitor. He was also an enthusiastic Territorial officer.

He sailed to France with the British Expeditionary Force and took part in the evacuation from Dunkirk.

He was killed, aged 28, in the fighting in North Africa.
