Cycleway extends to Harrogate High School Campus

28 AUGUST 2007: WORK is underway on the latest link in Harrogate Borough Council's cycling network.  This will run around the edge of the Harrogate High School Campus between Avondale Road and Kingsley Drive.

This is the final section of the route, which will link to the recently opened Dragon Bridge making it easier for pedestrians and cyclists to cross the railway line.   Opening this bridge was a milestone in Harrogate Borough Council and North Yorkshire County Council's plans to encourage more people to walk and cycle.   This final link in the route means people can walk or cycle between Bilton to Starbeck using cycle ways or quiet local roads.

Councillor Don Mackenzie, Cabinet Member for Planning and Transport, said: "This is a major step forward in delivering our cycling implementation plan which aims to establish a comprehensive system of cycle routes across the whole of Harrogate and Knaresborough to encourage the use of alternative methods of transport.   The link is programmed for completion before the start of the autumn school term.   We also hope to encourage more children to cycle to Harrogate High School and have already provided cycle friendly crossing facilities on Claro Road."

The scheme is being funded from North Yorkshire County Council's Local Transport Plan allocation provided by Government.   It has been developed in partnership with the Education Authority which has made the land available to allow the construction of the route, which will be separated from the school grounds by new security fencing.   ENDS
