12 November 2007: Harrogate Borough Council's Sports Development Team is on the look out for more volunteer coaches.

They currently work with over 300 volunteer coaches who make sure that thousands of young people across the district have the chance to take part in a variety of sporting and play activities - but more are needed.

The latest edition of the council's Club and Coach Education Programme has just been published and offers courses that are vital to clubs, coaches and potential coaches.

John McGivern, Senior Sports Development Officer, says the programme promotes a wide range of opportunities.   "The world of volunteering is constantly changing.   Our programme is aimed at improving the knowledge and skills base for clubs and coaches.   We are currently offering courses on Sports Coach UK's Safeguarding and Protecting Children and Running Sports - A Club for All, which are essential for clubs to achieve the accreditation they need for a variety of uses.

"Many parents become coaches and once the children go into further education, they stay on board to help other young people.   That's great for us.   But we also have many people who want to give something back through the sport they may have themselves enjoyed.   But these courses are open to everyone whatever their background."

The programme offers courses in athletics, basketball, cheerleading, cricket, football, gymnastics, hockey and inclusive sport and activities for young people with disabilities.
