6 May 2008:
BOROUGHBRIDGE has been welcoming visitors for centuries.
Possibly the most famous are the Brigantes and the Romans with nearby
Aldborough just possibly being the capital of the Brigantes before the Romans arrived.
So whether it is ancient battlefields, bird-watching, canal trips, Roman ruins, stately homes, stunning scenery or good old Yorkshire fayre you want, Boroughbridge has it all on offer.
And the latest project, delivered by the Renaissance Market Town regeneration partnership (Yore Vision), and part funded by Yorkshire Forward, will help visitors understand and enjoy even more this part of the Lower Ure Valley along with improving
economic regeneration
.
And who better to launch a new tourist trail than Ian Stewart, Renaissance Market Town Manager at Yorkshire Forward
.
Keith Rams
a
y, Chair of Yore Vision, explains.
"It is hard to capture all there is to offer in Boroughbridge and we decided that one of the ways we could improve that was by the introduction of a series of interpretative way-marked trails along the River Ure which runs through the town and surrounding villages.
This has been an amazing collaborative effort
by volunteers, members of Boroughbridge Town Council, Parish Councils, Yore Vision,
with support from Harrogate Borough Council and North Yorkshire County Council.
Each trail starts with a high profile panel produced by Adrian Bury Associates.
We have also produced an explanatory leaflet and when viewed together, they unlock some fascinating local history and explain the landscape along the river.
"They often say that those who know least about their area are the locals.
Not really true in the Boroughbridge area where we are proud of our history and visitor offer.
But we want to open up everyone's eyes so that they can see for themselves what a wonderful area this is to live and work in, or to visit for the day or stay as part of a tour of Yorkshire.
Two thousand years of history are to be found in Aldborough and Boroughbridge.
Most people just thunder by on the successor to the Great North Road the A1 but we want them to call in and stay a while and enjoy our tranquil surroundings."
Keith Ramsay would like to thank all of those involved for their hard work on this project and invites all to join Yore Vision and the Project Group to launch the Ure Walks Through Time on 12 May, 6.30pm, at Boroughbridge Library
which displays one of the interpretative boards in St James's Square one of three squares in the town.
A buffet and drinks will be available and all the six Interpretation Panels and Leaflets can be viewed.
