The 'Life in a Medieval Castle' gallery is designed to be of special interest to KS1 and KS2 pupils.
The gallery contains replica medieval costumes, examples of

chain mail armour and information about everyday life at the time, for both rich and poor people.
Pupils can also try brass rubbings and medieval games.
A newly designed comprehensive
trail is available and, by arrangement, schools can take part in a

Become a Medieval Engineer, Builder and Siege Engine Maker workshop, free of charge for one school.
Explore and investigate how medieval builders were able to construct large towers, castles and churches using only simple machines. Also, explore and investigate how they built siege engines to knock them down again!
In these 2 to 2.5 hour workshops, children, working in teams of 2 or 3, will build 2 or 3 large-scale constructions such as a bridge/drawbridge, tower, windlass (a medieval 'crane'), catapult and trebuchet. They will explore and investigate forces, structures and frameworks, simple machines/mechanisms all with an historical 'flavour' and of course, setting. The final part of the workshop will involve a challenge to see which team's siege machine can fling a beanbag the furthest across the grass.
