People who illegally sell cars from the roadside near the Stray in Harrogate are being warned to cease this trade or risk having the vehicle towed away.
That's the message being sent by Harrogate Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Planning and Transport, Councillor Don Mackenzie.
"In the past we have had occasional car sales from the highway but the situation is getting worse and we are receiving regular complaints from residents.
There are particular concerns about traders using the Stray as a car showroom.
These people have no scruples about running their outfits from public land whereas other used car sales organisations run professional businesses in the proper way.
"Selling cars from the highway as a part of a business operation is a nuisance that is now recognised in law.
We are working in partnership with North Yorkshire County Council's Trading Standards, with the police and the DVLA.
In Harrogate, the favoured location for these sales is adjacent to the Stray.
We are able to use the Stray Act to justify the towing away of vehicles.
"The council is determined to protect the Stray and we will take very action to do so."
