Council has £80,000 to spend on Camwal Road play area - public asked to help
10 September 2008 -
RESIDENTS of all ages in Starbeck are being invited to help Harrogate Borough Council spend £80,000 refurbishing the children's play area on Camwal Road.
Currently there are just two pieces of play equipment in the play area, as a number have had to be removed over the years because of damage or age.
Councillor Pat Jones, Cabinet Member for Cultural Services, says the council is in the early process of developing plans for the play area but wants to involve the local community at this stage.
She said:
"We are really keen to hear from children and parents or carers in the Camwal Road catchment area.
We want to invite them to help us make sure that we get the sort of equipment in place that children will want to play on.
Gone are the days when it was just slides, swings and a seesaw.
There's much more choice now and we want children to have that choice but, of course, within reason."
The £80,000 has come from developer-commuted sums to provide new recreational facilities in the Starbeck area.
The council also says that if it can get enough community support and perhaps set up a local 'friends' group, there may be opportunities to access external funding that isn't available to the council.
The council has set up a drop in consultation session being held on Tuesday, 23 September between 2.30 pm and 7.00 pm at St Andrew's Church, Starbeck.
Anyone interested in joining the Camwal Road play area support group should telephone Jennifer Harrop, Playgrounds' Officer on 01423 556751.
