Yorkshire Water apologises over painting a tree at Birk Crag nature reserve

DATE PRESS RELEASE ISSUED:   21 November 2008

YORKSHIRE WATER APOLOGISES FOR USING TREE AS LOCATION MARKER

Yorkshire Water has apologised to Harrogate Borough Council after one of its employees painted a tree in Birk Crag nature reserve nr Harrogate.   The alder tree had been marked with bright blue lettering intended to act as a 'marker for location identification'.

On being notified by a concerned local resident who regularly walks in this local beauty spot, the council contacted Yorkshire Water.

Arboricultural Manager, Paul Casey, has now had a letter of apology in which Yorkshire Water also confirmed that the paint had been removed without damage to the tree.

Mr Casey said:   "This was obviously of equal concern to Yorkshire Water and I am sure in future they will make all employees and contractors aware that they should not be making marks on woodland trees or indeed any other tree on public land.   I am confident that the tree will not have been adversely affected and I am pleased that the company responded positively and quickly."
