What is Council Tax?

What is Council Tax?

Council tax is one of the ways in which the council raises money to pay for the services it provides. It's based on the value of a property and the number of people aged 18 or over who live there.

Council tax is set by calculating the cost of providing county, police, fire, local and parish council services. We set our portion of council tax after calculating the costs of providing our services and considering income from other sources, such as government grants.

We are responsible for collecting council tax, however 85 percent is collected on behalf of North Yorkshire County Council, North Yorkshire Police Authority, and North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Authority.

The amount you have to pay is based on the band your home is in.
