Harrogate and District Allotment Show Sunday 16 August

Harrogate and District Allotment Show Sunday 16 August

The late Ron Fry, long-time stalwart of the Harrogate and District Allotments and Gardens' Federation and the mastermind behind the Annual Allotment Show, is to be honoured at this year's event being held on Sunday, 16 August 2009 in the Sun Pavilion, Valley Gardens, Harrogate.

During the show, which is the 49 th annual event, a special seat recognising Ron's long horticultural and community commitment will be commemorated.

Ron died in January aged 87 years whilst still holding the title of President of the Federation.   Ron organised the very first Allotment Show, which in those days was part of the Great Autumn Show.   Such was its success it is now held as a stand-alone event and is jointly organised with Harrogate Borough Council.

Ron became a member of Harrogate in Bloom soon after it was set up in 1988 and Pam Grant, President of the Group says he brought to it enthusiasm and determination.   She added:   "Everything he contributed was aimed at encouraging as many gardeners and allotment holders as possible of whatever age to get involved in improving Harrogate's environment.   Ron was awarded a Golden Jubilee Community Volunteers' award in 2002 in recognition of all his work in the community.   We miss his dedication and enthusiasm but he has left a lasting legacy behind him."

Ron was also a cricket enthusiast and umpired for the Nidderdale League for 45 years.   The league has also contributed towards the cost of the commemorative seat.

The allotment sh ow starts at 11.00 am and finishes at 4.30 pm.   As well as a good display from the district's allotment holders, there will be live music, children's activities, a tombola and raffle, competitions and cakes and much more.   Once the judging is over the allotment holders will be selling their produce.

All funds raised this year will go towards Harrogate and Ripon Blind Society and the Ripon Workhouse Garden.
