Harrogate Council prepares for winter weather

Harrogate Council prepares for winter weather

26 October 2009

As Harrogate and Knaresborough's trees turn to autumn gold, highway officers are thinking about winter and keeping the roads open.

Harrogate Borough Council, as highway agents for North Yorkshire County Council for the towns of Harrogate and Knaresborough, has confirmed that its salt barn at Claro Road Depot is full.   The council has a regular supplier to keep the salt barn well topped up.

Once frost, ice or snow is forecast, Harrogate Council will pre-salt all priority 1 routes, which are the main roads in the towns.   Post salting of priority 2 roads will follow. This is in line with North Yorkshire County Council's policy.

Councillor Don Mackenzie, Cabinet Member for Planning and Transport, said:   "We get excellent weather forecasts so we can have crews ready throughout the day and night to make sure major roads in Harrogate and Knaresborough are kept open.   Our priority will continue to be to keep open bus routes, schools and other key locations, including hospitals and medical centres.

"It is possible that some motorists may have to travel on minor roads before we get round to grit them.   We would urge everyone to be patient and to drive carefully. "
