2009 - Not in My Neighbourhood Week hailed success (11 November)

Activities carried out in the Harrogate district for Not in My Neighbourhood week 2/8 November 2009 have 'driven' home the 'how to stay safe' message.
Harrogate District Safer Communities Partnership took to the streets of Harrogate, Knaresborough and Ripon to show residents and children first hand how they can avoid becoming victims of any unlawful or unpleasant activity.
Police officers, joined fire crews, local neighbourhood safety teams and council staff in a series of events during this special week.
As well as presenting a seminar to over 100 parents at Aspin Primary School in Knaresborough about the dangers of on line child exploitation, Ripon Police patrolled the market place warning about thefts from handbags giving away over 50 purse alarms; and hundreds of leaflets were handed out around the three towns offering other crime prevention tips.
Councillor Les Ellington, Chair of the Safer Communities Partnership and Harrogate Council's Cabinet Member for Public Protection, said:
"We had a tremendous response from residents who were keen to speak to firemen or policemen or civilian staff.
"We live in a particularly low crime area but that doesn't mean we shouldn't still be vigilant and do all we can to protect ourselves, our possessions and our children.
"One eye-catching activity was the car we had parked in Harrogate town centre with flags pointing out all the things we know we should do but sometimes forget.
Don't leave valuables on show, pull in your wing mirrors to avoid clips by other vehicles and never ever leave a vehicle unlocked."
