Harrogate District Safer Communities Partnership mark Road Safety Week 2009 20 Nov 2009

Harrogate District Safer Communities Partnership mark Road Safety Week 2009 20 Nov 2009

The Harrogate District Safer Communities Partnership's Road Safety Group is highlighting road safety issues throughout Road Safety Week 23 27 November 2009.

The Partnership is working with Menwith Hill and the Army Foundation College to deliver some important road safety messages.

Road Safety Week is supported by BRAKE, the National Road Safety charity and their focus for the week is Not a drop, Not a drag - Stay Sober, Save Lives.

BRAKE is calling on all drivers to commit to not drink a drop of alcohol before driving, or drive after taking illegal drugs.   BRAKE is also calling on communities to inform the police of known drunk and drugged drivers and help save a life.

To report somebody call North Yorkshire Police on 0845 60 60 24 7 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Phil Whild, Chair of the Harrogate District Safer Communities Partnership's Road Safety Group said:   "We are continually working towards reducing the number of road accidents within the district and Road Safety Week provides an ideal opportunity to emphasise the importance of road safety at all times."

The Partnership is also focusing on a number of other issues during the week:
Reminding people that using a mobile phone and not wearing a seat belt is an offence and will incur a Fixed Penalty Notice
  • The Seatbelt Sheriff is visiting as many primary schools as possible in the district
  • Driving Assessments will take place at Menwith Hill
  • A 2 young 2 die presentation will be given throughout the week to the young soldiers at the Army Foundation College
  • Eyesight checks will be offered at Menwith Hill and the Army Foundation College
  • Child car seat checks will take place at Menwith Hill and its garage will provide free vehicle checks to encourage people to make sure their cars are winter-roadworthy.   They will also be offering a cycle proficiency course
  • Launch of the Harrogate District Don't Drink Drive campaign on
