Starbeck play area goes from run down to fantastic with £95k makeover 26 Nov 09

25 November 2009

Camwal Terrace play area has gone from run down to fantastic says 12-year old Amanda Green who lives on the Terrace.

Amanda will join the Mayor of the Borough of Harrogate (Councillor
Mrs Pat Jones) to formally re-open this play area on 1 December 2009 following an £95,000 refurbishment.

Amanda and her family were among a number of Starbeck residents who have worked with Harrogate Borough Council to make sure that the new equipment is what children and parents wanted.

The £95,000 has mainly come from developers, following new development
at the old Harrogate General Hospital site, whereby the council asked for a contribution to provide new recreational facilities in the Starbeck area.

Councillor Richard Cooper, Cabinet Member for Cultural Services, thanks everyone who has worked with the council to develop the plans for this new play area.   He added:   "We have a major project underway to improve play activities right across the district either working with funding partners such as North Yorkshire County Council or standalone using money that the borough council gathers from developers to improve play activities.

"Children in Starbeck have told us over the past couple of years that they really wanted a play area that was up to date and exciting to use.   And Amanda is right, it has gone from run down to fantastic.   The whole area has also been helped by some external improvements to nearby business premises owned by Daleside Brewery and Albert Hymas Limited."

This new play area caters for a wider age range to test skills and challenge children using the equipment.   It has a picnic area, two climbing units, one for toddlers and one for juniors, toddler and junior swings, a roundabout and a climbing net.   For older children there is an assault course, nest swing, aeroskate and a twinfly.

There are plans to further improve the area with tree planting programme.   A lighting column has been installed with a socket for the mobile CCTV camera.    ENDS

PHOTO OPPORTUNITY 1.00 pm, Tuesday 1 December 2009 Camwal Terrace play area.   Amanda Green will cut the ribbon with the Mayor of the Borough of Harrogate.   They will be joined by children from the Starbeck area.
