100 stall holders at Ripon market on 24 December compete for best dressed stall. 16 Dec 09

18 December 2009

Over 100 stallholders at Ripon's market being held on 24 December are competing for the best dressed 'Christmas' stall.

The Mayor of this ancient market city, Councillor David Parnaby, will sample a few of the stallholders' wares, study their form and decide which one will lift the inaugural trophy for Ripon's Best Christmas Market Stall.

Derek Thacker, Market Superintendent for Harrogate Borough Council, is the man behind the idea for bringing even more festive cheer to the market square.   He said:   "Markets are always fun and lively but this is a miserable time weather wise for market stallholders and we thought this was a bit of fun to lift all our festive spirit.

"I am sure we can expect a lot of mistletoe, clementines and natural greenery, but I am expecting some innovative stuff too!   If you feel like avoiding the queues in the supermarket or just need to pick up that last bit of your Christmas shopping, I would urge you to visit the market on the 24 th."

There has been a market in Ripon for over 1000 years.   Today, Ripon's popular market offers fresh fruit and vegetables, flowers, fresh fish and meat, clothes, jewellery, and much more.

PHOTO OPPORTUNITY 12 noon on Thursday, 24 December 2009.   Meet Derek Thacker at the Obelisk in the Market Square and together with the Mayor of the City walk to the winning stall.
