Air Quality Management Area (AQMA)

Air Quality Management Area (AQMA)

Traffic at Bond End Under the Environment Act 2005, we are required to review and assess the air quality in the Harrogate District on a regular basis. We have to monitor pollutants that are set out in the National Air Quality Strategy.
A review and assessment of the air quality carried out in 2009 showed that the annual objective for Nitrogen Dioxide, which mostly comes from traffic pollution, had been exceeded in central Ripon (Low and High Skellgate) and Bond End, Knaresborough. Each area has been declared as an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA) since November 2010.

A further assessment shall be carried out within 12 months to determine whether the AQMA's are still appropriate, and identify what the main sources of pollution are.

We will produce an Air Quality Action Plan within 18 month, which will set out a package of methods to tackle air pollution, specifically Nitrogen Dioxide. We are working alongside relevant Council Departments and the North Yorkshire County Council. Once a draft Action Plan has been produced, a consultation will begin with local residents and businesses within the AQMA areas.
