Permanent mobile recycling in Knaresborough 10 Feb 2010

Permanent mobile recycling in Knaresborough 10 Feb 2010

8 February 2010

Thanks to a successful three-month trial, Knaresborough residents are to have a permanent mobile recycling facility from 31 March 2010.

Harrogate Borough Council set up the trial last October to assist residents who wish to recycle but whose properties are inaccessible for the kerbside recycling service.

The success of the trial and its popularity with residents has resulted in the council deciding to make the facility permanent.

Councillor Michael Harrison, Cabinet Member for the Environment, says that officers have also listened to what residents have said about timings and that the scheme should operate both in the Market Square and the car park of Knaresborough House, to assist residents who live at that end of the High Street.

He said: "At a time when councils are considering cuts in services, this is an example of this council rolling out new services to residents and modifying them to make sure that we are providing what people want. The scheme is an innovative recycling solution to service an area that is hard to reach.   We are now looking at adding further trial mobile recycling facilities in other hard to reach areas around the district."

The council is also trialling battery recycling in eight schools and two of the council's offices.   If it is a success it is hoped to add this to the service too.

Knaresborough's mobile recycling service will operate on a fortnightly basis from Tuesday, 31 March 2010.   Between 7.30 am and 9.00 am it will be on the Market Square moving to Knaresborough House car park at 9.00 am until 10.30 am.

Debi Rowe, Waste and Environmental Services Manager, added: "I would like to thank Knaresborough residents who have embraced this new facility and also Knaresborough Town Council for their support.

"The amount of materials collected was pleasing and we hope that more residents will take advantage of this service.   We will also use this as a community resource regularly inviting colleagues from around the council to join us on site so that residents can talk to them about other areas of council services."
