Non Payment Of Business Rates

Each instalment is due on or before the 1st of each month. If payments are not made, as specified on the demand notice, recovery action will be initiated and the costs of any action are payable by the ratepayer.

Reminder Notice

A reminder notice may be issued at any time after the 1st of the month for any instalments that may be outstanding. Please note that only one reminder notice will be issued in any one year to ratepayers who fall into arrears with their instalment arrangement. On the second occasion of default the full outstanding balance of the account, not just the outstanding instalments will become payable.
E.g. If a reminder is issued for the April instalment and this is paid, if any future payment is not paid on or before the due date the full balance outstanding on the account will become payable immediately and the ratepayer will lose their right to make payment by instalments during the remainder of the year.

Summons

Failure to pay a reminder amount will result in the issuing of a summons for which costs will be incurred. The full outstanding balance including costs will then become payable immediately. Should any of the outstanding balance or costs remain unpaid the Council will apply through the Magistrates Court for a Liability Order.

The cost for the issuing of a summons is £142.00 in 2008/09
The cost for the granting of a Liability Order is £48.00 in 2008/09

Payment Difficulties

If you have any difficulties in making payment, please contact the Revenues Service as quickly as possible to discuss the position and do not leave the matter until enforcement action has been initiated as this may result in you paying additional costs and a summons being issued even where an arrangement for payment may be agreed.
