Norwich Union Fun in Athletics Competition

This annual competition was held on the 30 March 2008 at the EIS in Sheffield. A 30-strong team of Under 11s from Harrogate Borough Council's Sports:Hall Athletics programme took part from the Harrogate Granby, Boroughbridge and Nidderdale clubs. Harrogate competed against eleven other areas across the Yorkshire and Humberside region, taking part in a mixture of points-scoring and fun events in track and field such as the obstacle relay, hurdles relay, target throw, javelin and long jump. Harrogate's girls' team placed ninth and the boys' also ninth, a great achievement for the children involved, in what was for a lot of the children, their first taster of a regional competition.

Annual Kwik Cricket Tournament

Knaresborough Cricket Club was the venue for this annual event. Local primary schools competed against each other for the opportunity to represent the district in the annual Youth Games event next year.

Norwich Union Star:Track Athletics Event

Young people in the district once again took part in Harrogate Borough Council's annual Star:track athletics summer scheme held at Harrogate High School. The week long scheme of fun athletics sessions was part of a national series of events run by UK Athletics and sponsored by Norwich Union. The children received high quality athletics coaching, took part in competitions, quizzes and team races and also completed an indoor athletics decathlon, which gained them 'Agility Challenge' awards; but the highlight of the week was a visit from GB Athlete Richard Buck, who won a bronze medal at the 2004 Commonwealth Youth Games in Melbourne and a gold medal at the 2005 European Junior Athletics Championships.

The children also completed the 'Mile Challenge', for which they managed to raise £400 for the Athletics Foundation, a charity which aims to support the next generation of young British athletes in the run up to the London Olympics in 2012. The final day prize giving saw awards presented for Outstanding Athletic Achievement and Fair Play.
