Plastic Bag Free Harrogate

The email bulletins provide information about forthcoming environmental events, council consultations and news about environmental activities the Action for the Environment Group and the council are running. You will get the bulletin about four times a year.

More about the Action for the Environment Group

 
Action for the Environment Group logoThe Action for the Environment Group is comprised of representatives from local environmental groups, businesses, and community and statutory organisations and individuals with an interest in environmental issues, allowing a wide range of environmental, social and economic interests of the community to be considered.
 
The Group was established as part of the Agenda 21 process, to investigate the issues that needed to be covered in the district's Local Agenda 21 Plan, called "Action for the Environment"
 
The Group's aim is to stimulate new projects and promote awareness of environmental issues. The Group helps the council in developing its environmental policy. It is also one of the key forums of the Local Strategic Partnership and contributes to the development of the Harrogate District Community Plan.
 
The Group's Terms of Reference contain more details about its purpose, aims and membership.
 
Recent projects and activities include:
  • Hosting the district's Plastic Bag Summit to discuss the use of plastic carrier bags with major supermarkets
  • Sponsoring the successful funding bid to the Harrogate District Strategic Partnership for the schools environmental project
  • Supporting the Harrogate District Green Business Club
  • Being a partner organisation for the Harrogate Car Share scheme
  • Supporting the BAFTERS environmental awards and helping to judge the entries
  • Responding to national and local consultations on the UK Sustainable Development Strategy, the Harrogate District Waste Action Plan, and various planning consultations.
 
The group regularly meets to discuss current projects and future interests and  also holds public meetings for a wider audience. Recent guest speakers have given talks on topics such as wildlife gardening, Fair Trade, GM crops and wind farms.
