Top tips to save up to
£200 per year
Try these practical measures and save on your fuel
bills:-
- Radiator foils, reflective material placed behind a
radiator, reflects the heat back into the room, is easy to fit and
can save up to £20 per year
- A hot water tank jacket properly fitted saves
about £20 per year
- Choose energy efficient fridges, freezers, washing machines
and dishwashers (white goods) 'A' rated products could
save £45 per year. Look for the logo.
- Central heating: Some people overheat their homes. Just
turning your thermostat down by one degree centigrade
could cut your heating bill by 10%, saving you at least £10
per year
- Loft insulation saves around £50 per year

year

not overfill, and in only one week you will have saved enough
energy to light your house for a whole day
- Do not leave the television on standby, this can cost
up to £30 per year
- Always make sure you have a full load before switching
the washing machine on
- Lighting: installing just one energy saving bulb can
save up to £10 a year. They now come in all shapes and sizes
including spotlights and halogen bulbs.

Renewable Energy
The generation of power from renewable sources does not produce
the greenhouse gases which contribute to climate change. Renewable
energy does not run out, and its costs are falling not rising.
No one can own the sun or the wind so no one can charge you for
using them.
Renewable energy can be installed in your home or businesses to
save you money and help relieve the impacts in North Yorkshire
and beyond.
More information is available by clicking on the links
below:
Purchasing renewable energy technology
allows you to use natural unlimited energy resources for free
without releasing harmful gases to the environment.
You can now earn money by generating your
own electricity at home, through the Clean Energy Cashback scheme.
Visit: the
Energy Saving Trust website for more information.
Renewable electricity suppliers
You may be able to get electricity generated from renewable
resources directly through a "green tariff" from your current
energy supplier.
Harrogate Borough Council does not recommend specific
suppliers of green tariffs, however, you may find the following
websites useful as a guide:
Ground Source Heat Pump
scheme
In 2005, we installed Ground Source Heat Pumps in eight
council-owned bungalows as a trial project.
As a result of the trial, we are now installing Heat Pumps in
many more council homes.

Climate Change Strategy
The climate is changing now, and more change is in the
pipeline.
A lot of this change is happening because of the greenhouse
gases that we are adding to the atmosphere. These gases are
trapping more heat, making the overall temperature of the world
increase. This is changing our climate, and we will see more
extreme weather and other effects as a result.
Tackling climate change and adapting to its effects may be
difficult, but there are also opportunities for better energy
efficiency and green technology.
It will take time and coordinated international action to
stabilise and reverse these changes. But that does not mean we have
to wait before taking action in the Harrogate District.
Our plan
Harrogate Borough Council has adopted a Climate Change
Strategy that aims to cut the District's carbon dioxide emissions
by 40% by 2020.
We are also aiming to make a 40% reduction in CO2
emissions from our own operations by 2020 and an 80%
reduction by 2050.
There are four main areas in the strategy:
- Energy use - e.g. improving energy efficiency in homes,
businesses and in the council's operations; promoting and using
renewable and other low carbon energy sources.
- Transport - e.g. improving vehicle efficiency in the council's
fleet; promoting alternatives to private cars.
- Purchasing - e.g. using the council's purchasing power to adopt
sustainable procurement principles within the council.
- Raising awareness and changing attitudes - e.g. working with
schools and community groups on the Community Carbon
Reduction project; providing information to householders in
both public and private sector housing; and providing assistance
for local businesses to cut carbon and raise awareness in the
workplace.
