The aim of the road safety team is to reduce the number and severity of  casualties on our  roads.
 
Harrogate Borough Council provides a road safety education, training and publicity service for the Harrogate and Knaresborough Agency area

Harrogate Borough Council provides a Highways Service on behalf of North Yorkshire County Council. This Agency area covers the townships of Harrogate and Knaresborough, but does not include other areas within the Harrogate Borough Council District.   • We provide instruction, advice and resources to schools, groups and individuals.
  • We distribute publicity materials in support of local and national campaigns.
  • We provide cycle and pedestrian training services.

Road safety milestones

1934: Driving test introduced

1935: 30mph speed limit established for towns and villages

1960: MOT test introduced

1965: 70mph speed limited introduced

1965: It becomes compulsory to fit front seatbelts in cars built in Europe

1967: Breathalyser test introduced

1983: Regulations on the wearing of seatbelts by drivers and front seat passengers come into force under the Transport Act 1981

1989: It becomes compulsory for children to wear rear seatbelts

1991: Rear seatbelt regulations are extended to adults

2003: It becomes illegal to drive while using a hand-held mobile phone
