All landlords are responsible for ensuring that the gas appliances owned by the landlord, in your home, are working safely. Your landlord must take all reasonable steps to ensure that these gas appliances are checked once a year by a CORGI registered engineer. CORGI will be replaced by a new registration body in April 2009. The new name is not yet known but the new Gas Registration Scheme will be run by Capita Group plc.
If you live in rented accommodation and you have a gas appliance of your own (e.g. gas cooker), it is your responsibility to ensure it is safe.
All gas appliances need the correct amount of air to burn correctly. Where ventilators are fitted, you must not obstruct them, or reduce their size.
Do not use it if you think it is unsafe.
Tell your landlord immediately (follow it up in writing and keep a copy).
If you suspect a leak, dial 0800 111 999 IMMEDIATELY. Your call will be routed to the National Gas Emergency Service 24 hour Call Centre.
If a repair taking longer than 30 minutes is required, the emergency engineer will advise you that it must be carried out by a CORGI registered engineer. If you are a tenant and the defective pipework or appliance is not your own, report the repair to your landlord.
