An overpayment of benefit happens when benefit is paid to which you are not entitled. This may happen if there is a change in your circumstances which means you will be entitled to less benefit. Examples of such changes are:
It is therefore important that you tell us about changes of circumstances straight away.
We will write to you giving full details of the overpayment including what has caused it, the amount, the dates of the overpayment and what to do if you disagree with it. If we are going to ask you to pay back the overpayment we will write to you and advise how this will be done.
