Anti-Social Behaviour
Anti social behaviour covers a wide range of activities and is
often the term we give to actions we do not like.
Its legal definition is also wide, to paraphrase the Crime
and Disorder Act 1998, it is behaviour which causes or is likely to
cause harassment, alarm or distress to one or more people who are
not in the same household as the perpetrator.
If we are to tackle the behaviour which is described as anti
social then we must be clear about what it is, which agency can
assist, what is at the root of the behaviour and what is the
outcome we all want from actions taken.
The following list of behaviours may help you to decide if you
may be suffering from anti social behaviour that can be
challenged.
- Excessive
noise
- Lack of control over pets
- Verbal harassment
- Damage to street furniture
- Graffiti
- Rowdy behaviour
- Dropping
litter
- Begging
- Fly tipping
- Street drinking
- Damage to buildings
- Interfering with vehicles
- Abandoned vehicles
- Public drug misuse
Background information is very important when challenging anti
social behaviour. Agencies need to know the
frequency of the behaviour, who is involved, times and dates of the
activity and your assistance in recording and monitoring the
behaviour is crucial if agencies are to take up the matter on your
behalf.
Anti social behaviour cannot be resolved by the support
agencies without your help, here are a number of useful tips for
you to employ:-
Keep a written log of all acts of anti social behaviour,
including times, dates and details of incidents.
This is valuable to the organisation you have reported the problem
to and is one of the best ways of gathering evidence to support any
proceedings.
Speak, calmly to the person responsible for the
nuisance. This is best done at an agreed time
when both parties are calm as tempers can easily flare when dealing
with nuisance.
