Carpet Bowls not Carpet Slippers
JENNYFIELD Styan Community Centre, which is
operated by Harrogate Borough Council, is turning to Sir Francis
Drake for inspiration for their latest community facility carpet
bowls.
Sir Francis, is probably the country's most famous bowls'
player having kept the navy waiting to sail to stop the Spanish
Armada reaching our shores while he finished a game on Plymouth
Hoe.
There will be no such pressures on participants taking part in
Jennyfield's latest venture.
All they will need to do is swap their carpet slippers for the
special bowling carpet at the community centre which, along with
two sets of bowls, has been generously purchased by the Fulton
Lodge to get this new leisure activity underway.
Fulton Lodge is sheltered property in Jennyfields run by Sanctuary
Housing Association. Tenants from the Lodge are
regular visitors to the community centre.
Gavin Turnbull, the council's Community Development Assistant
at the Centre, said: "We have a lot of
activities at the centre but carpet bowls is very popular which is
why we have decided to give it a try. This form
of bowling is a good form of exercise as well as being a way of
meeting new people. We also don't have to worry
about the weather."
Weekly carpet bowling sessions, which are open to everyone,
start on Monday, 18 April and will be held each week between 9.30
am and 12.30 pm. The cost is just £1.50
and will include light refreshments. The
sessions are open to all residents.
