Youth sport in North Yorkshire continues to go from strength to strength as was demonstrated on Sunday 8 May when over 1,400 young people from across the region aged 8 to 16 years took part in the 6th Annual North Yorkshire Youth Games.

Held at the stunning venue of Ampleforth College, the event attracted youngsters from all eight districts in North Yorkshire, competing in 12 sports across 19 categories including, for the first time in the Games, gymnastics, rounders and aquathlon.

North Yorkshire Sport Co-ordinator, David Watson, is pleased that this year's event has proved hugely popular, building on the success of previous Games and taking the level of competition even further.  "The ethos of the Games is to make sport and competition fun and accessible to as many people as possible and this year's event has undoubtedly fulfilled that goal."

Damien Smith, Senior Sports Development Officer for Harrogate Borough Council, added: "These Games gives young people in our district the opportunity to gain representative honours across a number of sports in a competitive but fun atmosphere.  There is a wealth of talented young people in the district and it is great that an event like the Youth Games can showcase that"

The Sports Development Team at Harrogate Borough Council ensured that the district was well represented across all sports with over 200 children taking part.  Every single district had at least one winning team and as well as picking up individual trophies, the Harrogate district collected the Fair Play Trophy for the first time.

All participants will be formally recognised at the Youth Games Mayoral reception which will take place in June at Harrogate Grammar School.
