Turkish Baths Decorators Win Top Award
ONE of a team of specialists employed by
Harrogate Borough Council to carry out the £1m restoration of
its Turkish Baths in Harrogate has won an industry award for their
work. Specialist decorators, W H Bonney of York
have been very highly commended in the Decorative category of the
Painting and Decorating Association's National Premier Trophy
Awards 2005.
The whole of the restoration work was undertaken through a
conservation plan, which was produced by Peter Gaze Pace, Chartered
Architects of York. Mike Bonney and his team
researched the original decoration of the Turkish Baths with the
architect and have carefully restored the original as near as
possible. This included hand crafting stencil
templates to follow the original designs.
Councillor Pat Jones, Cabinet Member for Cultural Services,
has congratulated W H Bonney on this award. She
said: "This was painstaking work and it was wonderful to see the
peeling away of years of re-decoration to reveal the original
intention of a highly decorative facility. Mike
Bonney and his team were tireless. You can't
just pop down to a DIY store and find stencils.
They had to hand-design and cut each one before they even got near
to opening a paint tin. The results are just
fabulous and are drawing compliments from visitors both local and
from around the world."
The presentation of the awards will take place on 9 June at
the Painters' Hall in London. They will be
awarded by Master of the Livery Company, Mr David Clover, to Mike
Bonney, his foreman Will Ferguson and Peter Gaze Pace,
Architect. ENDS
