Measures Start to Move Traffic on Skipton Road
MEASURES aimed at improving traffic flow along
Skipton Road are to start on Monday, 20 June
2005.
Work is starting on a number of experimental traffic
management arrangements, which include alterations to the road
markings to extend the right turn lane into Kings
Road. This will take traffic from the queue of
vehicles travelling straight ahead on Skipton Road helping to
reduce queues.
In order to achieve this arrangement safely, and to avoid
conflict with traffic travelling in the opposite direction, it will
be necessary to prevent the right turn from Skipton Road into
Church Avenue. People living on Church Avenue
will be able to use King Edwards Drive to access their properties
from Skipton Road.
Another proposal involves the removal of the left turn from
Westmoreland Street into Skipton Road which will allow more "green
time" to be given to traffic on Skipton Road reducing queues and
delays. Traffic wishing to turn left will be
able to do so by turning left from Westmoreland Street into Regent
Parade and then turning onto Skipton Road from Dragon Parade.
Unless unforeseen problems are encountered in the first few
days, it is intended that the experimental measures will be
retained for a number of months. Council
engineers will be monitoring traffic flows and undertaking journey
time surveys to assess the effect of the measures during this
period.
Commenting on these new measures, Councillor Julian Sturdy,
Cabinet Member for Transport, said: "This is
part of the council's continual programme of looking at ways of
improving traffic flow through Harrogate and
Knaresborough. Skipton road has 27,000 vehicles
a day travailing on it but our aim is to continue to find ways to
maximise capacity and keep the traffic
moving."
"We believe that improvements can be achieved without creating
other problems on the side roads. But we would
welcome feedback from the motoring public during the experimental
assessment period." ENDS
