Guided Tour of Stonefall Cemetery
Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at your
local cemetery? How are the different areas of the grounds managed
and maintained and what do the sculptures represent? On June
28th all will be revealed as you are invited to take a
free guided tour of Stonefall Cemetery in Harrogate.
The tour will provide a brief history of Stonefall Cemetery
and Crematorium, the original burial areas, the Commonwealth War
Graves and Hebrew Cemetery and the new graves laid out after the
Second World War. Alongside these areas are those dedicated to
cremated remains, to children and babies, and to woodland burials,
which follow environmentally sound practices. There will also be an
opportunity to view the Crematorium, which carries out around 1,500
cremations per year, the Book of Remembrance room in the Chapel and
the Columbarium. A walk through the Memorial Garden and its
sculptures will also form part of the tour.
"The last time we opened our doors to the public in an
informal way like this was over a year ago and there was a great
deal of interest," said Philip Andrew, Harrogate Borough Council's
Bereavement Services Manager. "The cemetery is a fascinating and
calming place, full of history and a very attractive part of the
landscape. People are always surprised to find out about the wide
range of services we offer here and how extensive the area is
behind the main gates on Wetherby Road."
The guided tour is free and will take place on Tuesday
28th June at 7pm from the Main Office just inside the
gates on Wetherby Road.
