Land Deal Improves Stonefall Household Waste Recycling Site

LAND owned by Harrogate Borough Council is to be released for improvements to the busy Stonefall Household Waste Recycling Centre, in Harrogate.

The Borough Council will transfer land, forming part of the access to Stonefall Recreation area, to North Yorkshire County Council which has the statutory duty to provide household waste recycling centres previously known as civic amenity tips.

This land deal is needed to assist the County Council improve the design and performance of the Stonefall site.  The redesign proposed will boost the amount of waste recycled and will also include more capacity for off-road traffic queuing with the aim of addressing traffic congestion problems near the site.

Harrogate Borough Council's Cabinet has agreed to the release of the land to facilitate the much-needed improvements.

Council Leader, Councillor Mike Gardner, said: "We have happily agreed to release this land to help the County Council carry out improvements at Stonefall, but this agreement is on condition that the County Council secures another household waste site in the district to help take pressure of Stonefall.  Plans also include an improved layout at the site and I have asked to be consulted on those plans.

"If these improvements are successful they will support two of our key corporate priorities.  First, that we improve traffic flow in our towns and secondly that, by aiding more recycling, we are continuing our commitment to caring for the environment.  I also understand from the County Council that the proposed works at Stonefall can be accommodated at a lesser cost than first envisaged and that it is intended to use the surplus to support further development of the household waste recycling centre network across our district.  This is vital as we work with the County Council to meet government targets for the recycling of waste"

The County Council will be providing further details of the work they are proposing and how it will affect access to the site whilst the improvements are carried out.
