Local Transport Improvements Wetherby Road
Harrogate Borough Council is to encourage more people to use
public transport in the Wetherby Road area by upgrading bus
shelters and providing special facilities to help people with
disabilities.
The £90,000 funding is being provided by the government
as part of the North Yorkshire County Council's Local Transport
Plan, which promotes policies aimed at encouraging the use of
public transport as an alternative to the motorcar and improving
transport opportunities for the disabled.
Harrogate Borough Council acts highway agency area for the county
council in Harrogate and Knaresborough and therefore makes bids to
this funding plan.
The works, which started this week, include the provision of
new shelters and raised kerbs to help disabled people get on and
off the bus more easily.
Councillor Julian Sturdy, Cabinet Member for Transport said:
"We plan to upgrade the bus stops on Wetherby Road to complement
the low floor buses that are being introduced by Harrogate and
District Travel on this route, which should make the service more
attractive to users. Hopefully, these improvements will also
encourage more people to use public transport which will help
achieve our aim of reducing traffic congestion."
