The 2001 Census reported 77,943 economically active individuals of working age (in employment or seeking employment) in the District, representing an economic activity rate of 71.4%.  This is significantly higher than the national rate of 66.5%.
 
Of those economically active in the district, 42.2% were in full time employment compared to 40.5% nationally.  The percentage of self-employed people in the District was also above the national average, at 11.9%, compared to 8.3% in England & Wales.

According to the Census of Population 2001, the highest proportion of jobs held by Harrogate residents was in managerial occupations (19%). Associate professional / technical occupations accounted for 16% and skilled trades account for a further 10%.
