POPULATION OF THE HARROGATE DISTRICT
June 2010:
In mid 2009 the estimated resident population of
the Harrogate district was 157,900.
This is the latest available data and indicates a rise of 1.2% (or
1,800 people) from the previous year's estimate of
156,100.*
The main factor behind the increase in population has been net
migration, with more people moving into the district that
leaving. Collating the incoming population by age band
shows:
- 50% (900 people) 65 years+ male
/ 60 +years female
- 39% (700 people) 16 - 64 years male /
59 years female
- 11 % (200 people) 0 - 15 years
The Harrogate district has experienced the second highest
annual increase in population, within the North Yorkshire
County, after Richmondshire. Within the County the total
resident population has increased by 0.7%, or 4,200 people.
Of this increase 42.9% has been within the Harrogate
district.
The profile of the District's population by broad age group
remains unchanged by the increase, with a composition of :
- 0 -15
years
= 18%
- 16 - 64 years male / 59 years
female = 60%
- 65 years+ male / 60 years+
female = 22%
