With the dramatic rise in house prices and increase in demand for second homes over the last few years, people on modest incomes and first time buyers have found themselves priced out of the market in rural areas. These are the people who often work in key service areas, or contribute greatly towards the local community. |
We have also seen an increase in the closure of village schools,
post offices and shops. These are businesses and services which are
seen as vital to maintaining a sustainable community.
All of this means that many people are being forced to move out of
rural areas, away from communities in which they have lived and
contributed, resulting in these communities becoming less
sustainable.
The Council employs a Rural Housing Enabler, who is active in trying to address these problems by increasing the provision and choice of affordable homes for local people in the rural areas of the Harrogate district.
| The Council helps to identify and raise awareness of local housing needs and provides advice and support to rural communities, landowners and Parish Councils on affordable housing. Visits to Parish Councils, landowners and other interested parties can be arranged to talk about the part they can play in helping local people access affordable rural housing. | ![]() |

The Rural Housing Enabler works closely with the council's Housing and Planning teams alongside a range of local housing providers to create more affordable rural housing opportunities in the district. |
