Donations, Bequests & Legacies
Do you have an object or painting you want to give to the
museum or art gallery collections?
If you are thinking of offering something, please telephone
first to see if it is an object that might be of interest. If it is
then a curator will ask you to bring it in as objects must be
seen before being accepted.
The curator may need to keep an object for a week or two for
examination to help us make a decision. You will be given a copy of
a form verifying that you have left your object in the care of the
Museums and Arts service.
A curator will contact you to let you know whether your object
is suitable for the collections. You will be asked to collect your
object if it is not accepted.
We are guided by our
Acquisitions and Disposals
Policy. This outlines the collections already held and the
types of object that can be collected. We try to avoid collecting
duplicates. Usually objects for the Human History collections must
have a connection with the Harrogate District. We also consider if
the object is in good condition and whether we have space to store
it safely. We accept objects only as outright gifts, not on
long-term loan.
Making a bequest
Sometimes people may want to make a bequest of an object or
painting in their will. It is always best to discuss your plans
with a curator first. We can then tell you if it will be wanted. We
reserve the right to turn down unsolicited bequests.

service, please call 01423 556188 or use the form to
