8 May 2007 NO single person can prevent
climate change but we can all do our bit. Many
people in the Harrogate district, either as part of a group,
business, school or organisation, are doing just that and more
besides.
That is why their efforts are going to be recognised by
Harrogate Borough Council and entries are being invited for this
year's prestigious BAFTERS Awards (Best Action for the Environment
Road Show).
A cash prize of £400, donated by the Yorkshire
Agricultural Society, will be awarded to the best school, and the
winning community group will also scoop a cash prize.
Representatives from all organisations will get the 'red
carpet' treatment at the Awards Ceremony at a top Harrogate venue
on 2July which will be compered by popular BBC weatherman Paul
Hudson.
Simon Johnson, Head of Environment at Harrogate Borough
Council is one of the BAFTERS' Award judges. He
said: "The BAFTERS are an excellent opportunity
for all local organisations to show off their environmental
work. One of the great things about the BAFTERS
is that any environmental activities can be included - no matter
how big or small.
"At the last BAFTERS held in 2005 we heard about a huge range
of activities being carried out to protect and enhance our
environment, such as a community group developing a village garden,
a school which promoted energy saving light bulbs, and a business
which paid staff to cycle to work.
I'm looking forward to seeing equally diverse entries in this
year's BAFTERS Awards."
The BAFTERS are free to enter, and entry forms have been
sent out to around 300 organisations across the
district. Forms are also available online
at or by phoning John Ward-Campbell on 01423 556909.
The closing date for entries is Friday 25 May 2007.
