Mayor hosts reception for 150 sporting enthusiasts
17 JULY 2007 : OVER 150 young
people from around the Harrogate district have been invited to a
civic reception to recognise their participation in the North
Yorkshire Youth Games held at Ampleforth College in
June.
The Games are the region's most prestigious sporting event for
children and bring together teams from all over the county in a
spirit of friendly rivalry.
The Mayor of the Borough of Harrogate (Councillor Cliff
Trotter) is hosting this civic reception with support from
the North Yorkshire County Sports Partnership who
organise the Games.
The Partnership, which includes the district councils of
Craven, Hambleton, Harrogate, Richmondshire, Ryedale, Scarborough
and Selby, City of York and North Yorkshire County Council, is
passionate about providing everyone in North Yorkshire with the
opportunity to lead an active healthy lifestyle and the resources
to develop their sporting abilities.
As co-founder some twenty-five years ago of the Harrogate and
District Junior Football League, Councillor Cliff Trotter is no
stranger to helping young sporting enthusiasts.
"I am delighted to be hosting this event for so many young
people. I know how important it is for children
to be able to participate in competitive sporting
events. I certainly support the new Prime
Minister's thoughts on getting more youngsters into
sport. Indeed, much of what he is asking for is
already happening in the county. I only wish he
could see for himself how much work goes on here to make it easy
for youngsters to get involved in sport both in and out of
school. Perhaps next year we will invite him to
this awards ceremony or even the Games themselves."
The Mayor will be congratulating Pannal Primary School
winners of the Hi 5 Netball; St Aidan's Church of England High
School winners of the U13 Girls' Netball; and
Ripon Leisure Centre Gymnastics Club winners of
Key Stage 3 Gymnastics. He will also be
presenting all participants with medals and
certificates. ENDS
