Conserving Knaresborough's Conservation Area - public meeting

29 AUGUST 2007- PEOPLE with an interest in protecting the unique character of Knaresborough are being invited to attend a workshop being held by Harrogate Borough Council's Heritage and Design Team, which will start the process of an appraisal of the Conservation Area.

The Harrogate district is proud of its natural and built heritage and it depends on additional controls in conservation areas to help protect these important elements.

The former West Riding County Council designated Knaresborough's Conservation Area in   March 1969 and Harrogate Borough Council designated the Abbey Road Conservation Area in July 1978.  They were reviewed in the early 1990s and on 20 January 1994 the modified combined Knaresborough Conservation Area was created.  Areas that were brought into the amended Conservation Area included High Bond End, York Place, a length of Boroughbridge Road, Prospect Terrace and the area near the entrance of the Dropping Well estate. I

It is now over 10 years since all of the district's 52 Conservation areas were last reviewed, Councillor Don Mackenzie, Cabinet Member for Planning and Transport, says the time is right to evaluate the special interest of the Conservation Areas and to understand how the local community values the special qualities of this important market town.

He said: "We are keen to involve local people, whether they have a business or a home in the area.  There have, of course, been changes to Knaresborough in the last thirteen years but in the main they have had little impact on the character of the area.  There are great plans for Knaresborough's future and we want to make sure that they do not impact on its unique character."

"This appraisal process will provide the basis for the positive management of the conservation area for the future."

The workshop will be held between 9.30am to 1.00pm on Saturday
15 September 2007 at Gracious Street Methodist Church.  Numbers are limited so please book a place by emailing naiomi.kempton@harrogate.gov.uk or by phone on 01423 556593.

The findings of the workshops will help in preparing a draft document for formal public consultation and, following this, a final version will be used to assist in the planning of the area.

NOTE TO EDITORS:  The following is a list of what those who attend the workshop will look at:
