11 October 2007: A
£760,000 lifeline to save Starbeck Baths has today been
revealed by Harrogate Borough Council.
In unveiling this major 10-year investment plan, Councillor
Andrew Jones, Cabinet Member for Resources, said: "The problems
with Starbeck Baths were revealed some years
ago. A major capital programme was needed for
repairs. I am delighted to announce a 10-year
investment programme, with a budget of £760,000, in this
popular local facility.
"This investment plan builds on the three year emergency
repair work programme, started in 2004, to secure the Baths
immediate future whilst a longer term funding programme was
secured.
"The investment is being financed through the council's
Leisure Fund, which was recently created through the council's
careful budget management and by using efficiency savings created
elsewhere.
"We have very detailed knowledge about what is needed at the
Baths, and unless there are some major unforeseen problems, these
funds will be spent on the plant room and customer
facilities."
Councillor Pat Jones, Cabinet Member for Cultural Services,
said: "We have fought to keep the Baths open, and I would like to
thank everyone who has contributed to this positive
news. This investment gives Starbeck Baths a
future which is sustainable under present financial
conditions."
Pat continued: "Starbeck Baths are a popular part of our local
infrastructure. They now have a future."
Starbeck Baths are 130 years old, having been originally
built in 1870. Previously known as the Prince of Wales Baths, they
became one of the foremost Spa attractions in the Victorian era.
