19 November 2007 CADETS from the Army Foundation
College in Harrogate are joining forces with the Pinewoods
Conservation Group and the Tree Team at Harrogate Borough Council
to plant over 600 tree whips in the Pinewoods as part of National
Tree Week (22 November/3 December).
National Tree Week is the Tree Council's festival to mark the
start of the tree planting season, and a nationwide celebration of
trees and woods. National Tree Planting Year
1973 (with its slogan of 'Plant a Tree in 73') led to the founding
of The Tree Council to bring together organisations working for
trees.
It ran the first National Tree Week in
1975. Now, up to a million trees are planted
each year as a result of this winter festival
Paul Casey, Arboricultural Manager, for Harrogate Council,
will be on hand at this planting session along with members of his
team. He said: "Tree whip
planting is a simple operation, but of course is backbreaking work
especially when we are planting in numbers like
this. Everyone concerned is very grateful for
the support from the Army Cadets whose help and muscle has been
called on for a number of years now. As well as
the forty cadets, Pannal Scouts' Group is also helping
us. We hope to get all the tree whips, guards,
mulch mats and mulch in place in one day. This
is a big undertaking and if anyone else would like to assist on the
day they are more than welcome".
Planting will take place from 9:30am on Sunday, 25
November.
The tree whips have been provided by the Pinewoods
Conservation Group using money they have raised from
grant applications and events such as the Pinewoods Open
Day. This planting is part of the 10-year
woodland management plan for Pinewoods, with this work being the
completion of year one.
